Memories of Murder (2003)
The year is 1986, the first serial murders in the history of Korea are taking place, and local police detectives are in over their heads. Anyone deemed suspicious enough to commit these heinous acts are rounded up and subjected to police brutality, creating a split between local law enforcement and the community they're supposed to protect.
Another dreary night, the soft patter of rain hits against the windows of the local radio station. A listener writes in to request a song - this isn't the first time the melody has played during a storm. The following day, a body is discovered in a wheat field just outside of town. Modus operandi confirmed - the killer has struck again.
Memories of Murder, Bong Joon-ho's 2003 crime thriller, sheds light on the Hwaseong murders that occured between the years of 1986-1991 in South Korea. A mashup of genres, impeccable pacing, and a standout ensemble, this proves to be one of the most gripping films of the 2000's.
